What is in a blog? A blog by any other name would still be interesting to read.
Happy Sunday! Krissy Joy here with the very first Jewelry Capable blog post.
While I ponder in my head the decision to start a blog, I am reminded of a famous quote by Lao Tzu "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"
If I was doing this for myself alone, I wouldn't bother but I love people...
I want to see everyone's needs met and the need for accessible jewelry is huge!
To this point, my vision is to combine forces with many jewelers to help fill this ginormous void. However, I am stuck on developing criteria for what varying types of assistive/allergy conquering jewelry might look like.
I have thus far identified 5 types of people that are underserved in the jewelry industry:
People with arthritis whose knuckles swell to the point where rings don't fit or just spin around on the main part of their finger and who experience pain when they try to make use of a standard clasp.
People with fine motor skill impairments and/or tremors who experience difficulty getting clasp ends to match up and would rather not have to grab small things in general.
People with nerve damage who have difficulty feeling the pressure they are trying to apply to their jewelry in order for it to function properly. Sometimes they are even afraid to apply too much pressure because it may risk damaging their treasured jewelry.
People with metal allergies, including rare allergies to typically safe metals. These people are afraid to wear any metals because most jewelry metals are alloyed with allergy inducing things like nickel and copper. It has recently been discovered that some people have allergies to pure gold (https://www.healthline.com/health/allergic-to-gold#nickel-in-gold)
People with limited range of motion who have difficulty reaching their hands behind their neck or head in order to put a necklace on. They may also have difficulty reaching to add toe rings and anklets.
Ultimately, I want to meet the needs of all these people with both appropriate jewelry and tools that nobody has ever seen before to reunite them with the ability to wear their treasures.
