Lately, I have been reading a book titled Secrets of a Successful Jewelry Brand by Effy Tal and have made some strides in learning to see things from a new perspective.
First of all, I was busy chasing after individual artisans to contribute to the items featured in the Jewelry Capable store when I realized that most local artists don't even have accessibility on their radar. In addition to this, Effy was writing about how important it is for jewelry brands to acquire wholesale accounts. After reading this, I realized that having consignment agreements with other brands is not quite how things work in this industry. It is much more common for brands to seek wholesale accounts. In other words, I will be much more successful if I seek out well established accessible looking jewelry lines and buying bulk from them at a discounted rate. This isn't to say that I am entirely out of luck on getting local artists interested in what I do but, for now, I will shift my time and energy away from local artists until more awareness is raised.
In a nutshell, in order to better serve my fans I will need to take on the full role of a retailer that gathers many wholesale accounts and organizes them into one place.
I have researched four or five well established jewelry lines and tools that would fit the expectations of Jewelry Capable but am now hitting a new road block. How do I put in five wholesale orders of $700 each when I barely have $500 saved...
I am slowly selling jewelry pieces from my own personal line and will keep plugging away at that. If I continue at this rate, It will take me 2-3 years to save enough capital to start incorporating other lines.
Hopefully, I will get some better ideas as I continue to read through Effy's wise words but am not above praying for a miracle.
